सौवर्णानि सरोजानि निर्मातुं संति शिल्पिनः ।
तत्र सौरभनिर्माणे चतुरश्चतुराननः ॥

निर्विषेणापि सर्पेण कर्तव्या महती फटा ।
विषं भवतु वा मा वा फटाटोपो भयंकरः ॥

nirviSheNa api sarpeNa kartavyA mahatI phaTA ।
viSham bhavatu vA mA vA phaTATopo bhayankaraH ॥

दानोपभोगरहिता दिवसा यस्य यान्ति वै ।
स लोहकारभस्त्रेव श्वसन्नपि न जीवति ॥

dAna upabhoga rahitA divasA yasya yaanti vai ।
sa lohakAra bhastreva shvasannapi na jIvati ॥

If a person neither gives his wealth away, nor enjoys it then his living is a big waste. He is only breathing just like the air sac of a blacksmith and not 'living'.

तीक्ष्णधारेण खड्गेन वरं जिह्वा द्विधा कृता ।
न तु मानं परित्यज्य देहि देहीति भाषणम् ॥

tIkShNadhAreNa khaDgena varam jihvA dvidhA kRutA ।
na tu mAnam parityajya dehi dehi iti bhAShaNam ॥

It is better to rip your tongue with a sharp knife than losing self respect and uttering "Give me! Give me!". Never plead for alms.

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानान्न तु वित्तस्य संचयात् ।
स्थितिरुच्छैः पयोदानां पयोधीनामधः स्थितिः ॥

One gets respect by giving away wealth in charity, not by accumulating wealth. Clouds that give water has its place high in the sky. The seas that collect water has its place below.

मृदंगो मुखलेपेन करोति मधुरध्वनिम् ॥

Who in this world can not me brought under control by filling their mouths with food? (by bribing). When the Mridanga's face is smeared well, it starts making melodious sounds.

कुग्रामवासः कुजनस्य सेवा
    कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्या ।
मूर्खश्च पुत्रो विधवा च कन्या
    दहन्ति चैतानि जनं विनाग्निम् ॥

kugraama vAsaH kujanasya sevA
    kubhojanam krodhamukhI cha bhAryA ।
mUrkhashcha putro vidhavA cha kanyA
    dahanti cha etAni janaM vinA agnim ॥

These things will burn a man alive without any fire - living in a bad village, serving a bad master, a bad meal, an angry wife, idiot son, widow daughter.

काक आह्वयते काकान् याचको न तु याचकान् ।
काकयाचकयोर्मध्ये वरं काको न याचकः ॥

When a crow finds food, it calls out for other crows. A beggar does not do the same. He is greedy and wants it all for himself. So, if you compare a crow and a beggar, a crow is better.

A girl looks for beauty in her match. Mother wants to make sure that he is wealthy. Father looks for education. Relatives will look for good family so that they can make new acquaintances. Others look for good meal with lots of sweets.

उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पः समर्थो न तथा महान् ।
प्रायः कूपस्तृषां हन्ति न कदापि तु वारिधिः ॥

A wealth (great) person may not be able to help the same way as small person can do. When you are thirsty, a well can help you - not an ocean.

बकास्तत्र न बध्यन्ते मौनं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥

Chirpy birds like the parrot get caught in the net because of their words. (because people like to have them as pet). A duck never gets caught because it does not make any sound. Anything can be achieved by being silent.

अर्थी करोति दैन्यं लब्धार्थो गर्वमपरितोषं च ।
नष्टधनोऽस्ति सशोकः सुखमास्ते निःस्पृहः पुरुषः ॥

arthI karoti dainyam lubdhArthI garvam aparitoSham ca ।
naShTa dhano asti sashokaH sukham Aste niHspRuhaH purShaH ॥

Those who want wealth and not have it will make themselves pitiable in order to get it from others. Those who have wealth become restless and unhappy because they want more. Those who lose wealth will drown in grief. If you want to be happy, one must not long for wealth.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - सर्वनाशे समुत्पन्ने


सर्वनाशे समुत्पन्ने ह्यर्धं त्यजति पण्डितः ।
अर्धेन कुरुते कार्यं सर्वनाशः सदुःसहः ॥


- सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय


sarvanAshe samutpanne hi ardhaM tyajati paNDitaH ।
ardhena kurute kAryaM sarvanAshaH saduH sahaH ॥

- subhAShitaratnasamuchchaya


When wise men are faced with big trouble (total destruction) then they give up half of their belongings - instead of trying to protect all. They will work with only half and get their work done. It is very difficult to protect your entire wealth in the face of destruction.
