समयोचितपद्यमालिका - न कूपखननं युक्तं

न कूपखननं युक्तं प्रदीप्ते वह्निना गृहे ।
चिंतनीया हि विपदामादावेव प्रतिक्रिया ॥

na kUpa khananam yuktam pradIpte vahninA gRuhe ।
chintanIyA hi vipadAm aadAveva pratikriyA ॥

It is not wise to start digging a well when your house is on fire. One must be prepared for calamities well in advance. When they strike, one must only effect a plan that is already made.

समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - कोऽर्थी गतो गौरवं

कोऽर्थान् प्राप्य न गर्वितो विषयिणः कस्यापदोऽस्तं गताः
    स्त्रीभिः कस्य न खण्डितं भुवि मनः को नाम राजप्रियः ।
कः कालस्य न गोचरत्वमगमत् कोऽर्थी गतो गौरवं
    को वा दुर्जयदुर्गुणेषु पतितः क्षेमेण जातः पथि ॥

ko arthAn prApya na garvato viShayiNaH kasya aapado astam gatAH
    strIbhiH kasya na khaNditam bhuvi manaH ko nAma rAjapriyaH ।
kaH kAlasya na gocharatvam agamat ko arthI gato gauravam
    ko vA durjaya durguNeShu patitaH kShemeNa jAtaH pathi ॥

Who can keep arrogance out even after becoming wealthy? Who can claim that all their troubles are over? Whose mind has not been broken by a lady? Who does a king like? Who can cheat death for ever? Which beggar has ever gotten any respect? Who has come back to right path after having strayed to the path of sin?

रसगंगाधर - त्रयं सुख़करं सताम्

शरीरं ज्ञानजननं रोगो विष्णुस्मृतिप्रदः ।
विपद्वैराग्यजननी त्रयं सुख़करं सताम् ॥

sharIraM GYAnajananaM rogo viShNusmRutipradaH।
vipadvairAgyajananI trayaM suKaharaM satAm ॥

These three are helpful to noble men - a body as a means to attain knowledge, a disease to help get closer to God and troubles to push towards austerity.

भागवत - विपदः सन्तु

विपदः सन्तु नः शश्वत्तत्र तत्र जगद्गुरो ।
भवतो दर्शनं यत्स्यादपुनर्भवदर्शनम् ॥

- भागवत

vipadaH santu naH shashvattatra tatra jagadguro।
bhavato darshanaM yatsyAt apunarbhava darshanam ॥

- bhAgavata

Oh God! let us be getting more and more troubles every day. Only then we will have a chance to see you. Only by seeing you can we get out of this eternal cycle of re-births.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - सर्वनाशे समुत्पन्ने

सर्वनाशे समुत्पन्ने ह्यर्धं त्यजति पण्डितः ।
अर्धेन कुरुते कार्यं सर्वनाशः सदुःसहः ॥

sarvanAshe samutpanne hi ardhaM tyajati paNDitaH ।
ardhena kurute kAryaM sarvanAshaH saduH sahaH ॥

- subhAShitaratnasamuchchaya

When wise men are faced with big trouble (total destruction) then they give up half of their belongings - instead of trying to protect all. They will work with only half and get their work done. It is very difficult to protect your entire wealth in the face of destruction.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - आपत्काल

बंधुस्त्रीभृत्यवर्गस्य बुद्धेः सत्वस्य चात्मनः ।
आपन्निकषपाषाणे नरो जानाति सारताम् ॥

- हितोपदेश, सुहृद्भेद

It is only during the times of trouble that peoples support to you is tested - like gold on touch stone. This applies to relative, wife, servants and one's own wisdom and courage.

शिशुपालवध - अल्पधीः अपायः

विदुरेष्यदपायमात्मना
    परतः श्रद्दधतेऽथवा बुधाः|
न परोपहितं न च स्वतः
    प्रमिमीतेऽनुभवादृतेऽल्पधीः ||

- शिशुपालवध

A wise man can foretell the problems that may come in his way. If he misses it, then he will at least listen when others tell him about the troubles he is going to face. But an idiot will neither see it himself, not listen to people who warn him about it. He comes to know about it only when he will experiences it (and unprepared).

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - आपदः

परनिंदासु पाण्डित्यं स्वेषु कार्येष्वनुद्यमः |
प्रद्वेषश्च गुणज्ञेषु पंथानो ह्यापदां त्रयः ||

सुभाषितसुधानिधि

There are three ways one can invite trouble - by attaining mastery in criticizing others, by being lethargic in one's own work and by being an enemy of the virtuous.
