सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - वाक् पारुष्य


क्षिपेद्वाक्यशरान्घोरान्न पारुष्यविषप्लुतान् ।
वाक्पारुष्यरुषा चक्रे भीमः कुरुकुलक्षयम् ॥

kShipet vAkya sharAn ghorAn na pAruShya viSha plutAn ।

One must not throw arrows dipped in the venom of harsh speech at any one. It can only lead to destruction of self. It is the harsh words of Duryodhana that angered Bheema to eventually destroy all the Kauravas.

वाक्सायका वदनान्निष्पतन्ति
    यैराहतः शोचति रात्र्यहानि ।
परस्परं मर्मसु ते पतन्ति
    तान् पण्डितो नापसृजेत्परेषु ॥

parasparam marmasu te patanti

Words are like arrows falling (shot) off our mouth. One who is hit by that arrow will suffer night and day. Usually people hit other where they are most vulnerable. Wise men will not use such tactics on others since they do not wish to hurt others.

    न श्रीखण्डविलेपनं सुखयति प्रत्यंगमप्यर्पितम् ।
प्रीत्यै सज्जनभाषितं प्रभवति प्रायो यथा देहिनां
    सद्युक्त्या च पुरस्कृष्टिमंत्रोपमम् ॥

A tired traveler will appreciate warm talk by a virtuous man which is as attractive and knowledgeable as the hymns. Other pleasantries like fresh cold water, a pearl neck-lace, or sandalwood paste applied to the whole body will not bring as much joy as the good words of a noble man.
