सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पः

उपकर्तुं यथा स्वल्पः समर्थो न तथा महान् ।
प्रायः कूपस्तृषां हन्ति न कदापि तु वारिधिः ॥

upakartum yathA svalpaH samartho na tathA mahAn ।
prAyaH kUpaH tRuShAm hanti na kadApi tu vAridhiH ॥

A wealth (great) person may not be able to help the same way as small person can do. When you are thirsty, a well can help you - not an ocean.

उद्वेजनीयो भूतानां नृशंसः पापकर्मकृत् ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानामीश्वरोऽपि न तिष्ठति ॥

udvejanIyo bhUtAnAM nRushamsaH pApa karma kRut ।
trayAnAm api lokAnAm eeshvaro api na tiShThati ॥

If a king behaves in such a way to make his subjects more anxious (and afraid) by his sinful acts, then it does not matter even if he is the lord of three worlds. He will still perish.

उत्तमैरुत्तमैर्नित्यं संबंधानाचरेत्सह ।
निनीषुः कुलमुत्कर्षमधमानधमांस्त्यजेत् ॥

A wicked person can never be at peace if he sees a noble man prosper. He will do anything to harm the noble man. A moth is ready to get burnt in the process of putting out the flame.

उच्छैर्गतिर्जगति सिध्यति धर्मतश्चेत्
    तस्य प्रमा च वचनैः कृतकेतरैश्चेत् ।
तेषां प्रकाशनदशा च महीसुरैश्चेत्
    तानंतरेण निपतेत् क्व नु मत्प्रणामः ॥

ucChaiH gatiH jagati sidhyati dharmataH chet

It is well understood that a good death is obtained only by following Dharma through out the life. That is possible only by reciting and understanding the scriptures (including the Vedas). That is achieved only the help of the Gods on earth who illuminate the directions here with they jist of the scriptures (perhaps teachers). So, who else should I pay my salutations to if not for them?

ईश्वराणां वचः सत्यं तथैवाचरितं क्वचित् ।
तेषां यत् स्ववचोयुक्तं बुद्धिमांस्तत् समाचरेत् ॥

IshvarANAM vachaH satyam tathaivAcharitam kvachit ।
teShAm yat svavachoyuktam buddhimAMstat samAcharet ॥

Whatever God says (in the Bhagavadgeetha) is truth. But his actions may not always be right. A wise man must observe when He has acted in accordance to his words and follow only that. (This verse may be in response to critics of Lord Krishna's questionable methods of fighting evil with deceit)

इह विरचयन् साध्वीं शिष्यः क्रियां न निवार्यते
    त्यजति तु यदा मार्गं मोहात्तदा गुरुरंकुशः ।
विनयरुचयस्तस्मात्संतः सदैव निरंकुशाः
    परतरमतः स्वातंत्रेभ्यो वयं हि पराञ्मुखाः॥

iha virachayan sAdhvIm shiShyaH kriyAM na nivAryate
    tyajati tu yadA mArgaM mohAt tadA gururankushaH ।
vinayaruchayaH tasmAt santaH sadaiva nirankushAH
    parataramataH svAtaMtryebhyo vayam hi parAnmukhAH ॥

If a student is going down the correct path, no one will stop him. If he strays, a teacher will punish him with love. In that respect every one is free as long as they are going down the right path (of Dharma). What more freedom does one want? We are happy in this type of freedom which is in our teacher's hands.
