समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - दुर्जनः

Between a wicked person and a snake, the snake is better. A snake bites occasionally only when provoked. But a wicked person does so often without any provocation.

Wicked people in this world come in various forms. When they are in company of scholars, they are in the form of a realised soul (with clear mind). When in company of saints they look like ascetics. When they are among others of their own kind, they become very vicious and spit poison.

Wicked people always speak harshly and dirty. Their words cause harsh noise and pain just like chains tied to your feet. On the other hand noble men are like anklets made of pearls - they make very pleasing sounds and never hurt.

- kAdambarI

During the mythical churning of the ocean out came elixir. But it so happened that it would not go down the throat of Rahu (the enemy of Arka - Sun). Just like that anything good like a subhashita will not go down the intellect of wicked men. On the other hand virtuous people will take it to their heart. Just like what Vishnu did with the perfect koustubha gem.

What did the ocean do with all fresh water that it collected from the mouths of all rivers? It made it salty, fed it to the underground fire and distributed among the underworld dwellers. Even if you give something magnificent to wicked people, they will misuse it.
