गरुडपुराण - विद्या

शौर्ये तपसि दाने च यस्य न प्रथितं यशः ।
विद्यायामर्थलाभे वा मातुरुच्चार एव सः ॥

- गरुडपुराण

shaurye tapasi dAne ca yasya na prathitam yashaH ।
vidyAyAm artha lAbhe vA mAtuH ucchAra eva saH ॥

- garuDapurANa

One must have attained fame in any of the below - courage, penance, charity, education or accumulation of wealth. If one is not able to do so, then his life is a waste - as if his mother gave birth to just a lump of flesh.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - भुवनत्रयतिलकं

यस्य न विपदि विषादः संपदि हर्षो रणे न भीरुत्वम् ।
तं भुवनत्रयतिलकं जनयति जननी सुतं विरलम् ॥

yasya na vipadi viShAdaH sampadi harSho raNe na bhIrutvam ।
tam bhuvana traya tilakam janayati jananI sutam viralam ॥

It is very rare that a mother gives birth to a son who is not sad when faced with trouble, not overly joyous when prosperous and not a coward in battlefield.

सभारंजनशतक - धैर्य शौर्य ज्ञान दान

न धैर्येण विना लक्ष्मीर्न शौर्येण विना जयः ।
न ज्ञानेन विना मोक्षो न दानेन विना यशः ॥

na dhairyeNa vinA lakShmIH na shauryeNa vinA jayaH ।
na jnAnena vinA mokShaH na dAnena vinA yashaH॥

- sabhAranjanashataka

There can not be wealth without courage, victory without bravery, salvation without knowledge and fame without charity.

मनुस्मृति - भीरवः

चरणामन्नमचराः दंष्ट्रिणामप्यदंष्ट्रिणः ।
अहस्ताश्च सहस्तानां शूराणां चैव भीरवः ॥

charANAm annam acharAH damShTriNAm api adamShTriNaH ।
ahastAshcha sahastAnAm shUrANAm chaiva bhIravaH ॥

Immovables (plants) become food to the movables (herbivores). Those without teeth (canines) to those with teeth (carnivores). Those without hands(fish, birds) to those with hands (humans). Cowards become food for the brave.

अशोचयन् प्रतिकुर्वीत यदि पश्येत् पराक्रमम् ।
भैषज्यमेतद्दुःखस्य यदेतन्नानुचिंतयेत्॥

ashochayan prati kurvIta yadi pashyet parAkramam ।
bhaiShajyam etad duHkhasya yad etat nAnuchintayet ॥

If you are courageous, you must attack the problems head on. Not thinking too much about it is the medicine for unhappiness.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - शक्तिः

अप्रकटीकृतशक्तिः शक्तोपि जनतिरस्क्रियां लभते ।
निवसन्नंतर्दारुणि लंघ्यो वह्निर्न तु ज्वलितः ॥

aprakaTikRuta shaktiH shaktopi janastiraskriyAM labhate ।
nivasannaMtardAruNi langhyo vahnirna tu jvalitaH ॥

One may be strong. If he does not show is strength every now and then, he will be subject to public neglect. One may walk across fire when it hidden inside the wood. But the same can not be done when it is in the form of flames.

सुभाषित रत्नभाण्डागार - श्री

अकृत्वा पौरुषं या श्रीर्विकासिन्यपि किं तया ।
जरद्गवोऽपि चाश्नाति दैवादुपगतं तृणम् ॥

akRutvA pauruSham yA shrIH vikAsinyapi kim tayA ।
jarat gavo api cha ashnAti daivAt upagatam tRuNam ॥

If you are accumulating wealth without any effort from your side, then what is there to be proud about. Even an old cow will graze happily if it come across a green pasture by luck.

चण्डकौशिक - धीरः

चलन्ति गिरियः कामं युगान्तपवनाहताः ।
कृच्छ्रेऽपि न चलत्येव धीरणां निश्चलं मनः ॥

calanti giriyaH kAmaM yugAnta pavana AhatAH ।
kRuchChre api na chalanti eva dhIraNAm nishcalaM manaH ॥

- chanDakaushika

The the mighty mountains also move under pressure from the winds that blow on the doom's day. Even in extreme trouble, the mind of a courageous person does not waver one bit.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - तेज

हस्ति स्थूलतरः स चांकुशवशः किं हस्तिमात्रोंऽकुशः
दीपे प्रज्वलिते प्रणश्यति तमः किं दीपमात्रं तमः ।
वज्रेणापि हताः पतन्ति गिरयः किं वज्रमात्रो गिरिः
तेजो यस्य विराजते स बलवान् स्थूलेषु कः प्रत्ययः ॥

hasti sthUlataraH sa chAnkushavashaH kim hasti mAtraH ankushaH
dIpe prajvalite praNashyati tamaH kim dIpamAtram tamaH ।
vajreNa api hatAH patanti girayaH kim vajra mAtraH giriH
tejaH yasya virAjate sa balavAn sthUleShu kaH pratyayaH ॥

An elephant is very big. But is controlled by a very small hook. Are they both of the same size? A small lamp destroys mighty darkness. Are they both of same size? A diamond can bring down a mountain. Are they both of the same size? He who has courage will become a winner. What has size got to with success?

मनुस्मृति - धर्मलक्षण

धृतिः क्षमा दमोऽस्तेयं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः ।
धीर्विद्या सत्यमक्रोधो दशकं धर्मलक्षणम् ॥

- मनुस्मृति

These are the ten qualities of Dharma (moral code of life): Courage, forgiveness, austerity, never stealing, cleanliness, control of senses, a balanced mind, good education, truth, being never angry.

हितोपदेश - सुहृत्भेद - दान बल श्रुत आत्म

धनेन किं यो न ददाति नाश्नुते
    बलेन किं येन रिपुं न भाधते ।
श्रुतेन किं येन न धर्ममाचरेत्
    किमात्मना यो न जितेन्द्रियो भवेत् ॥

What is the use of wealth that is not spent either in charity or on himself? What is the use of strength that is not used to control enemies? What is the use of reading all the scriptures that does not make you follow Dharma? What is the use of knowing thyself when you can not over come your senses?

वल्लभदेव - वीर्यवान्

सर्वैर्गुणैर्विहीनोऽपि वीर्यवान् हि तरेद्रिपून् |
सर्वैरपि गुणैर्युक्तो निर्वीर्यः किं करिष्यति ||

If one does not have lofty virtues but is courageous, he can conquer his enemies. What good is all the virtues if one does not have the courage to confront and conquer your adversaries?

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - शूरः पण्डितः

युध्यन्ति पशवः सर्वे पठन्ति शुकसारिकाः |
दातुं जानाति यो वित्तं स शूरः स च पण्डितः ||

All animals know to fight. Even birds like parrots can talk. Ability to fight and talk do not make us any better than them. He who has the ability to give away money (or any other wealth, like knowledge) should alone be called as brave or wise.

हितोपदेश - विग्रह - नय शौर्य

न साहसैकान्तरसानुवर्तिना
    न चायुपायोपहतान्तरात्मना ।
विभूतयः शक्यमवाप्तुमूर्जिताः
    नये च शौर्ये च वसन्ति संपदः ॥

It is not possible to accomplish great things by people who rely on courage alone, or intellect alone. Prosperity will be attained by those who can exhibit both these traits.

त्याज्यं धैर्यं विधुरेऽपि काले
    धैर्यात्कदाचिद्गतिमाप्नुयात्सः ।
यथा समुद्रेऽपि च पोतभङ्गे
    सांयात्रिको वांछति तर्तुमेव ॥

Even when one is faced with adversity, he must not abandon courage. If one has courage, he will one day meet a good end. Even when a ship is sinking, the sailors still look forward to being saved (or swim to the shore).
