पात्रविशेषे न्यस्तं गुणांतरं व्रजति शिल्पमाधातुः |
जलमिव समुद्रशुक्तौ मुक्ताफलतां पयोदस्य ||

Under the able guidance of a teacher (who understands your strengths) even a stone can attain greatness. Just like a drop of pure water from the rain into a sea will be transformed into a pearl if it is nutured in an oyster.

परिशिष्टपर्व - अहंकार

पश्यस्यद्रौ ज्वलमग्निं न पुनः पादयोरधः |
यत्परं शिक्षयस्येवं न स्वं शिक्षयसि स्वयम् ||

You can see the fire on top of a far off mountain, but can not see the fire right under your feet. You are eager in disciplining others. But you are not self disciplined. Such is the human nature - we only see faults in others.

प्ररोहिशाखिनां शाखास्कन्दसर्वविदारणे |
उपजीव्यद्रुमाणां च विंशतेर्द्विगुणो दमः ||

One must be punished severely if he cuts the branches and trunk of a tree that was growing well (freely and happily). The punishment must be doubled if the tree was being useful to people.

परितप्यत एव नोत्तमः परितप्तोऽप्यपरः सुसंवृतिः |
परवृद्धिभिराहितव्यथः स्फुटनिर्भिन्नदुराशयोधमः ||

A noble man will never feel envious about other people's success. A common man will feel jealous, but may not show it. He will also not let it affect him. But a rogue can not stop thinking about it,. He will attract a lot of grief due to other people's success and can not even hide it

परित्यजेदर्थकामौ यौ स्यातां धर्मवर्जितौ |
धर्मं चाप्यशुभोदर्कं लोकविक्रुष्टमेव च ||

One must avoid all means of wealth and pleasures that are against the moral code of life - Dharma. Even Dharma (of older times) has to be given up if it now becomes irrelevant, against the collective morality of all people or is found to yield bad results in future.

परवानर्थसंसिद्धौ नीचवृत्तिरपत्रपः |
अविधेयन्द्रियः पुंसां गौरिवैति विधेयताम् ||

One who does surrender himself for money, one who does take up immoral occupation for money, one who does not control his senses will finally end up losing his freedom and be domesticated like a cow.

परं कृतुशतात् पुत्रः सत्यं पुत्रशतात् परम् ||

A lake is more useful than a hundred wells. If we do not have the right apparatus to get the water out, a well is useless. Doing a Yajna (rituals) is more useful than finding hundred lakes. By performing Yajna one can get pure water in the form of rain. Having a son is better than performing hundred Yajnas. He shall perform many more Yajnas for you and help you accumulate good Karma. Always acting truthfully is better than all of them since it will eliminate the need for any of them.
