समयोचित पद्यमालिका - धर्माचरण

अजरामरवत् प्राज्ञो विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत् |
गृहीत इव केशेषु मृत्युना धर्ममाचरेत् ||

Virtuous men go about collecting knowledge and wealth as if they will live for ever. When it comes to following Dharma, they never procrastinate. They perform their duties as if death is holding them by their hair.

महाभारत - उद्योग - जयेत् सत्येन चानृतम्

अक्रोधेन जयेत् क्रोधमसाधुं साधुना जयेत् |
जयेत् कदर्यं दानेन जयेत् सत्येन चानृतम् ||

One must show patience to win over anger, virtue to win over the ignoble, benevolence to win over the miserly and truth over deceit.

मनुस्मृति - प्रायश्चित्तीयते नरः

अकुर्वन् विहितं कर्म निन्दितं च समाचरन् |
प्रसक्तश्चेंद्रियार्थेषु प्रायश्चित्तीयते नरः ||

- मनुस्मृति

If a man does not do his duties and follows a condemned path being a slave to sensory pleasures, then he is bound to spend the last day of his life in regret. He will long for atonement of wrong doings.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - युद्ध

होमार्थैर्विधिवत्प्रदानविधिना सद्विप्रवृंदार्चनैः
    यज्ञैर्भूरिसुदक्षिणैः सुविहितैः संप्राप्यते यत्फलम् |
सत्तीर्थाश्रमवास होमनियमैश्चान्द्रायणाद्यैः कृतैः
    पुंभिस्तत्फलमाहवे एनिहतैः संप्राप्यते तत्क्षणात् ||

Soldiers who die in a war get the same credit of good karma as any of the below - religious rituals being performed by very learned brahmins, rituals that have been performed by generously giving money, visiting many holy places (temples and ashrams), performing various ritualistic penances. All these are comparable to a person being ready to lay down his life to protect other people of his state.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - निर्भयः यदा रक्षति भूमिपः

स्त्रियः सपुरुषाः मार्गं सर्वालंकारसंयुताः |
निर्भयः प्रतिपद्यन्ते यदा रक्षति भूमिपः ||

If the king performs his duty of protecting his subjects very well, only then will the women of the state roam freely (and fearlessly) with their men on the streets of the city.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - साम दण्ड

साम्नैव यत्र सिद्धिः न तत्र दण्डो बुधेन विनियोज्यः |
पित्तं यदि शर्करया शाम्यति कोऽर्थः पटोलेन ||

What can be got by exercising reasonable patience must never be escalated to a full fledged conflict. The wise men know this. Sour sensation in the mouth can be mitigated by eating sugar. Why would one resort to bitter-gourd instead?

मनुस्मृति - न युद्धेन कदाचन

साम्ना दानेन भेदेन समस्तैरथवा पृथक् |
विजेतुं प्रयतेतारीन् न युद्धेन कदाचन ||

First one must exercise reasonable patience. Then We must try to concede some ground - compromise. Then we must try to penetrate the adversary's thinking and try to change it. All these are the methods are to be employed separately or together to win over an enemy. Waging a war is never a solution.
