When one is ill, he goes to doctor and takes the prescribed medicine. But while doing that if he doubts the doctor, then the illness will aggravate. This perhaps due the body subconsciously rejecting the medicine.

Chirpy birds like the parrot get caught in the net because of their words. (because people like to have them as pet). A duck never gets caught because it does not make any sound. Anything can be achieved by being silent.

What has become of this world? People do not believe the words of sages who live in hermitage and have never been exposed (or taught) deceit. On the other hand, they believe words of those who have learnt the art of deception as part of their formal education (the kings).

One must not think that appearances do not matter at all. People judge the ability of a person by what he wears. During the great churning of the ocean, the king of the ocean gave his daughter Lakshmi to Vishnu seeing that he was wearing gold. He gave poison to Shiva since he was not wearing anything (smeared his body with ash).

आकारश्छाद्यमानोऽपि न शक्यो विनिगूहितुम् ।
बलाद्धि विवृणोत्येव भावमंतर्गतं नृणाम् ॥

When you do penance in isolation your penance gets stronger. When you accept to be respected by followers, then the power of your penance decreases. When people worship you then your good karma erodes. When they do not, you are on your way to a good death.

One must get over lust by teaching one self not to feel the need. By giving up lust, one can give up anger. One will give up greed once he realises that wealth is the source of so many miseries. Fear can be let go by proper understanding of philosophy.

There is no letter in the alphabet that never occurs in any verse. No herb exists that is not part of some medicine. Likewise, no person is completely useless. It is however difficult to find a manager who can use him appropriately.

Even though there is only one truth, it may appear as many. Just like a person who sits to meditate sees dreams and wishes as separate even though they are the same. Hence one must contain the mind that thinks in both directions - positive and negative. Only then can one be free from fear.

One must study all the veda and other scriptures. Understand the philosophy behind them. Once done, a wise man will leave the scriptures behind and take only the knowledge. Just like anyone interested in the grains will leave the husk behind. Scriptures are only a means and not the end.

If servant is very loyal, but neither intelligent nor brave then he is of o use. If he is both intelligent and brave but lacks loyalty, then again he is of no use. Only those servants who are loyal, courageous and intelligent are the real reasons of a kings prosperity. The others are only playing supporting roles at all times.

In the times of kali (present age) deceit and sycophancy will earn you money. Truth and uprightness will lead you to poverty.

svalpam api anugantavyam mArgastho na avasidati ॥

One must try to follow the practices of noble men. It is not possible to follow them completely, at least a little effort must be done. By going down their path, one will definitely not be destroyed.

पराजयश्च संग्रामे तस्माद्युद्धं विवर्जयेत् ॥

Wealth is very fickle. It will goto different people every day. So is land. Today it may be with you, tomorrow it is with someone else. But fame is not like that. It will not go to anyone after you. It will remain yours for ever. It is like a chaste wife.

One who wants to be educated must not think he is a scholar already. He must also not use his education to kill someone else's fame. If he does that, he may get the world, but it is not permanent. He will not attain the eternal peace. (because he will be constantly on the guard that someone else may kill his fame)

It does not have petals or the leaves. How can I say that your efforts will go waste? This lotus is only showing off the supreme craft of a painter. Why are you going around this painting which is a mere illusion. (World being the painting, God being the creator and we being the bees.)

He is protecting the entire world with eight of his forces. Yet he is not proud of the same.

All the wealth accumulated to mitigate hunger by working for a king all life long is of no use. The only wealth that is permanent and worthwhile is the memory of Sri Krishna who protected Arjuna, who lifted Goverdhana mountain, who can make all troubles go away, who will satiate the hunger of knowledge of all wise men.

When Lord Shiva got ready to burn the cities built by the demon Tripurasura, Goddess Parvati is looking at him with love. The demons are scared and watching him with fear. The saints who have the cosmic realization are looking at him with compassion. Lord Vishnu is watching him with a smile. The Rakshasas are consoling their wives and drawing weapons. The Gods are all happy watching him. Let that Lord Shiva save us all.

Morning, night, dawn, dusk, fall, spring come and go. Times plays tricks on us. Our lives get eroded. But even then, desire does not die.

सेवध्वं विबुधास्तमंधकरिपुं माक्लिश्यतान्यश्रुते
     यस्मादत्र परत्र च त्रिजगति त्राता स एकः शिवः।

     कुत्र व्याकरणं क्व तर्ककलहः काव्यश्रमः क्वापि वा ॥

sevadhvaM vibudhAstam andhakaripum mAklishyatAnyashrute
     yasmAdatra paratra ca trijagati trAtA sa ekaH shivaH ।
AyAte niyatervashAt svaviShaye kAlAt kaRAlAt bhaye
     kutra vyAkaraNaM kva tarkakalahaH kAvyashramaH kvApi vA ॥

Oh scholars! Serve the only Lord who is can get rid of all darkness. He is the only one who can help you in this world, in the afterlife and in all the three worlds. He is Lord Shiva. When death comes to take you away you will be really scared. How will your knowledge of grammar, logic or poetry help?

शिवानन्दलहरी - कृतकृत्यः

सा रसना ते नयने तामेव करौ स एव कृतकृत्यः ।
या ये यौ यो भर्गं वदतीक्षेते सदार्चतः स्मरति ॥

- शिवानन्दलहरी

sA rasanA te nayane tAmeva karau sa eva kRutakRutyaH।
yA ye yau yo bhargaM vadatIkShete sadArcataH smarati ॥

It is not a tongue unless it utters the God's names always. It is not an eye unless it sees God in everything. It is not a hand until it is folded while worshiping God. One can claim he has done some work only when he remembers God always.

स्वाधीनं समतिक्रम्य मातरं पितरं गुरुम् ।

Mother, father and teacher are the Gods that we see. What kind of religion is that which tells us to forget them and go behind Gods that we do not see?

सर्वभूतेषु यः पश्येद्भगवद्भावमात्मनः ।
भूतानि भगवत्यात्मन्येष भागवतोत्तमः ॥

sarvabhUteShu yaH pashyet bhagavat bhAvamAtmanaH।
bhUtAni bhagavati AtmanyeSha bhAgavatottamaH ॥

He is the best devotee who is capable of seeing God in all beings and seeing all beings in God.

Only if the God is pleased, then man shall leave his innate qualities and attain salvation and become one with the universe.

A man may have good education and lot of wealth. But if he does not have devotion towards God then he will not achieve much in this world.

सर्वे विधिनिषेधाः स्युरेतयोरेव किंकराः ॥

smartavyaH satataM kRuShNo vismartavyo na jAtucit ।
sarve vidhiniShedhAH syuretayoreva kinkarAH ॥

All rituals are corollaries of the these two basic rules - "Always remember Sri Krishna. Never forget him".

Even though we are one and the same (same universal matter, Gos is the whole of which we are the parts), there is a difference between you and me. I belong to you. But you don't belong to me. Just like the waves and the ocean are the same. The waves belong to the ocean. But the ocean does not belong to the wave.

स्वर्गापवर्गयोः पुंसां रसायां भुवि संपादं ।

Heaven or hell, rebirth or emancipation, wealth in this world - all of these have the same source; your (God's) feet. You are the cause of everything.

A place in heaven, wealth, peaceful mind, education, a good son - none of this is difficult to get for a person who serves his teacher well.

संगः सत्सु विधीयतां भगवतो भक्तिर्दृडा धीयतां
     शान्त्यादिः परिचीयतां दृडतरं कर्माशु संत्यज्यतां ।
सद्विद्वानुपसर्प्यतां प्रतिदिनं तत्पादुका सेव्यतां
     ब्रह्मैकाक्षरमर्थ्यतां शृतिशिरोवाक्यं समाकर्ण्यताम् ॥

sangaH satsu vidhIyatAM bhagavato bhaktirdRuDA dhIyatAM
     shAntyAdiH paricIyatAM dRuDataraM karmAshu santyajyatAM ।
sadvidvAn upasarpyatAM pratidinaM tatpAdukA sevyatAM
     brahmaikAkSharamarthyatAM shRutishirovAkyaM samAkarNyatAm ॥

Befriend virtuous men. Have faith and devotion in God. Fill your mind with peaceful thoughts. Stop doing anything that would require applying force (on others). Follow wise men every day. Serve them with humility. Listen to the recitals of Veda from them. Try to understand the meaning of the word - Brahma (the creator).

हर्यष्टक - हरि

स गंगा स गया सेतुस्स काशी स च पुष्करं ।
जिह्वाग्रे वर्तते यस्य हरिरित्यक्षरद्वयम् ॥

- हर्यष्टक

sa gangA sa gayA setuH sa kAshI sa ca puShkaraM ।
jihvAgre vartate yasya hariHiti akSharadvayam ॥

He who has the name of 'Hari' at the tip of his toungue at all times is as holy as the Ganga, the Gaya, the Sethu (Rama sethu), the Kashi, the Pushkar.

स्मेराननं स्मरति गोपवधूकिशोरम्

शैवा वयं न खलु तत्र विचारणीयम्
    पञ्चाक्षरीजपपरा नितरां तथापि ।
चतो मदीयमतसीकुसुमावभासं
     स्मेराननं स्मरति गोपवधूकिशोरम् ॥

shaivA vayaM na khalu tatra vicAraNIyaM
     panchAkSharIjapaparA nitarAM tathApi ।
ceto madIyamatasIkusumAvabhAsaM
     smerAnanaM smarati gopavadhUkishoram ॥

We are the followers of Shiva. There is no doubt. We spend our time chanting the five syllable hymn - Om namah shivaya. But my mind always cherishes the memory of the lovely dark flower like face of the son of a cattle grazer (Sri Krishna).

प्रबोधसुधाकर - प्रक्षाल्यते चेतः

शुध्यति हि नान्तरात्मा कृष्णपदांभोजभक्तिमृते ।
वसनमिव क्षारोदैः भक्त्या प्रक्षाल्यते चेतः ॥

shudhyati hi nAntarAtmA kRiShNapadAmbhojabhaktimRute।
vasanamiva kShArodaiH bhaktyA prakShAlyate cetaH ॥

- prabodhasudhAkara

It is not possible to cleanse your mind without having complete devotion towards the lotus feet of Sri Krishna. Just like hard salt cleans a cloth, devotion cleans the mind.

विश्वगुणादर्श - न मोहं कलये ततः

श्रीरंगे शोभते यस्य श्रीरंगे शोभते च या ।
नमोऽहं कलये तस्मै न मोहं कलये ततः ॥

shriraNge shobhate yasya shriraNge shobhate ca yA ।
namo ahaM kalaye tasmai na mohaM kalaye tataH ॥

The Goddess of wealth glows in him and he glows in Sriranga (a holy city). I salute to that God. After that, my desires no longer exist.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - शास्त्राय गुरुसंयोगः

शास्त्राय गुरुसंयोगः शास्त्रं विनयवृद्धये ।
विद्याविनीतो नृपतिर्न कृच्छ्रेष्ववसीदति ॥

shAstrAya gurusamyogaH shAstraM vinayavRuddhaye।
vidyAvinIto nRupatiH na kRucchreShvavasIdati ॥

To learn about the scriptures, one must go to an able teacher. The goal of scriptures is to teach us humility. A king who has learned about scriptures and remains humble can not be destroyed.

नैषधीयचरित - बालिशा यदुपासिनः

श्वः श्वः प्राणप्रयाणेपि न स्मरन्ति स्मरद्विषः ।
मग्नाः कुटुम्बजम्बाले बालिशा यदुपासिनः ॥

shvaH shvaH prANaprayANepi na smaranti smaradviShaH।
magnAH kuTumbajambAle bAlishA yadupAsinaH ॥

This life will end tomorrow or the day after. Even at that time, fools will not remember God. Instead they run behind the sensory pleasures which are like mire.

रसगंगाधर - त्रयं सुख़करं सताम्

शरीरं ज्ञानजननं रोगो विष्णुस्मृतिप्रदः ।
विपद्वैराग्यजननी त्रयं सुख़करं सताम् ॥

vipadvairAgyajananI trayaM suKaharaM satAm ॥

These three are helpful to noble men - a body as a means to attain knowledge, a disease to help get closer to God and troubles to push towards austerity.

विक्रमोर्वशीय - निःश्रेयसायास्तु वः

वेदान्देषु यमाहुरेकपुरुशं व्याप्य स्थितं रोदसी
     यस्मिन्नीश्वर इत्यनन्यविशयः शब्दो यथार्थाक्षरः ।
अन्तर्यश्च मुमुक्षुभिर्नियमितप्राणादिभिर्मृग्यते
     सस्थाणुः स्थिरभक्तियोगसुलभो निःश्रेयसायास्तु वः ॥

vedAnteShu yam AhuH EkapuruShaM vyApya sthitaM rodasI
     yasmin Ishvara iti ananyaviShayaH shabdo yathArthAkSharaH।
antaryashca mumukShubhiH niyamita prANAdibhiH mRugyate
     sasthANuH sthirabhaktiyogasulabho niHshreyasAyAstu vaH ॥

The Upanishads call him as the only person who expands beyond the earth and the skies. For him, the word "Eshwara" (owner) does not refer to any one else. It is apt for him only. People who wish to be released from the cycle of births control their lives and want to see him. He is only obligated to strong devotion. Let such a God help me in attaining salvation.

भागवत - विषयान् ध्यायतश्चित्तं

विषयान् ध्यायतश्चित्तं विषयेषु विषज्जते ।

The mind that gives importance to sensory pleasures gets lost in the same. He who channelizes his mind towards me (God) will become one with me one day.

विविधनिगमसारे विश्वरक्षैकधीरे
     वृषशिख़रिविहारे वक्षसाश्मिष्टदारे ।

     भवतु चिरमुदारे भावना निर्विकारे ॥

Krishna is the essence of all the Vedas. He is the lone protector of the world. He wanders in the Sheshashaila. He has Lakshmi in his heart. He is never far away from the mind of the devotees. He is the only one with no defects. Let my devotion in you be for ever.

विपदो नैव विपदः

विपदो नैव विपदः सम्पदो नैव सम्पदः ।
विपद्विस्मरणं विष्णोः सम्पन्नारायणस्मृतिः ॥

vipado naiva vipadaH sampado naiva sampadaH।
vipat vismaraNaM visHNoH sampat nArAyaNa smRutiH ॥

Miseries are not real miseries. Wealth is not real wealth. Forgetting Vishnu is the real misery. Remembering him always is the real wealth.

भागवत - विपदः सन्तु

विपदः सन्तु नः शश्वत्तत्र तत्र जगद्गुरो ।
भवतो दर्शनं यत्स्यादपुनर्भवदर्शनम् ॥

vipadaH santu naH shashvattatra tatra jagadguro।
bhavato darshanaM yatsyAt apunarbhava darshanam ॥

Oh God! let us be getting more and more troubles every day. Only then we will have a chance to see you. Only by seeing you can we get out of this eternal cycle of re-births.

वासुदेवे भगवति भक्तिमुद्वहतां नृणाम् ।
ज्ञानवैराग्यवीर्याणां नेह कश्चिद्व्यपाश्रयः ॥

jnAna vairAgya vIryANAM na ihe kascit vyapAshrayaH ॥

Those who have strong devotion in God, will have knowledge, austerity and courage. To get these, they do not need any help.

रसने त्वं रसज्ञेति वृथैव स्तूयसे बुधैः ।
अपारमाधुरीधामरामनामपराञ्मुखी ॥

rasane tvaM rasaGYeti vRuthaiva stUyase budhaiH ।
apAra mAdhurI dhAma rAma nAma parAnmuKhI ॥

Oh! tongue, you are praised by scholars as being very tasteful. I find that praise a waste if you turn away from the one name that is the abode of all the sweetness - Rama.

भागवतमाहात्म्य - येषां चित्ते वसेद्भक्तिः

येषां चित्ते वसेद्भक्तिः सर्वदा प्रेमरूपिणी ।
न ते पशन्ति कीनाशं स्वप्नेऽप्यमलमूर्तयः ॥

yeShAm citte vasedbhaktiH sarvadA premarUpiNI।
na te pashyanti kInAshaM svapne api amalamUrtayaH ॥

Those whose mind is always filled with devotion towards God, those pure minds will not even see death in their dreams.

yA sRushTiH sraShTurAdyA vahati vidhihutaM yA haviryA ca hotrI

     pratyAkShAbhiH prapannaH tanubhiravatu vastAbhiraShTAbhirIshaH ॥

Let the God who is composed of all eight factors protect us - that which was created first (water), that which will take our ritualistic offerings to Gods (fire), that which is the owner of itself (energy), that which splits day and night (sun and moon), that which is the meaning of all words, that which has enveloped entire world (sky), that which causes the seeds to sprout (earth), that which gives life to all beings (air).

यस्य भक्तिर्भगवति हरौ निःश्रेयसेश्वरे ।

When a person is has complete devotion in God, then he is always happy as though he is floating in an ocean of elixir. What is the use of inferior small wells for him?

यशोदया समा

यशोदया समा कापि देवतनां तु भूतले ।
उलूखले यया बद्धो मुक्तिदो मुक्तिमिच्छति ॥

yashodayA samA kApi devatAnAm tu bhUtale।
ulUkhale yayA baddho muktido muktimicchati ॥

There is no one equal to Yashodha even in the group of Gods. While every one is trying to free themselves from the bondage the only one who can free them all (Krishna) is trying to free himself from Yashodha.

रामायण - अयोध्या - न सुप्रतिकरं

यन्मातापितरौ वृत्तं तनये कुरुतः सदा ।
न सुप्रतिकरं तत्तु मात्रा पित्रा च यत्कृतम् ॥

If one considers the efforts of parents in bringing up a child, then it is fairly obvious that one never be able to repay the debt.

यथा ह्यवहितो वह्निर्दारुष्वेकः स्वयोनिषु ।
नानेव भाति विश्वात्मा भूतेषु च तथा पुमान् ॥

nAneva bhAti vishvAtmA bhUteShu ca tathA pumAn ॥

Fire resides in wood and becomes one with it. Just like that the cosmic spirit even though alone, lives in all beings without being separate from any one of them.

मध्यमव्यायोग - भगवानुपेन्द्रः

यथा नदीनां प्रभवः समुद्रः
    यथाऽऽहुतीनां प्रभवः हुताशनः ।
यथेन्द्रियाणां प्रभवं मनोऽपि

yathA nadInAM prabhavaH samudraH
    yathA AhutInAM prabhavaH hutAshanaH ।

All rivers flow towards the sea. All offerings end at the pyre (Yajneshwara). All sense organs are controlled and work for the mind. Just like that, the master of all of us is Upendra (Vishnu)

भागवत - भूतेषु मत्परः

यथा पुमान्न स्वांगेषु शिरः पाण्यादिषु क्वचित् ।
पारक्यबुद्धिं कुरुते एवं भूतेषु मत्परः ॥

yathA pumAnna svAngeShu shiraH pANyAdiShu kvachit ।
pArakyabuddhiM kurute evaM bhUteShu matparaH ॥

Just like a man considers his own body parts - head, arms - as his very own, a person who understands and has complete devotion considers all beings of the world as his own.

Just like a lady made of wood (puppet), or a mechanical deer moves only on the commands and wish of its owner, the whole world moves and acts only the wish of the supreme cosmic spirit.

भागवत - भक्तिरुद्धवैनांसि कृत्स्नशः

यथाग्निः सुसमृद्धार्चिः करोत्येधांसि भस्मसात् ।
तथा मद्विषया भक्तिरुद्धवैनांसि कृत्स्नशः ॥

yathA agniH susamRuddhArchiH karotyedhAMsi bhasmasAt ।
tathA madviShayA bhaktiruddhavainAMsi kRutsnashaH ॥

Just like fire burning well can turn wood to ash, complete devotion towards me (Krishna) will burn any sin.

भागवत - सर्वार्हणमच्युतेज्या

यथा तरोर्मूलनिषेचनेन
    तृप्यन्ति तत्स्कन्धभुजोपशाखाः ।
प्राणोपहाराच्च यथेन्द्रियाणां
    तथैव सर्वार्हणमच्युतेज्या ॥

yathA taroH mUlanishecanena
    tRupyanti tat skandha bhuja shAkhAH ।

    tathaiva sarvArhaNamacyutejyA ॥

If you pour water to the root of a tree, the branches and the leaves feel happy. If the body is fed with life energy, the senses are happy. Just like that, if we worship Lord Vishnu, all other Gods also feel happy.

तत्रैव रमते हरिः

यत्र निर्मलभावेन सम्सारे वर्तते गृही ।
धर्मं चरति निष्कामं तत्रैव रमते हरिः ॥

yatra nirmalabhAvena samsAre vartate gRuhI।
dharmam carati niShkAmam tatraiva ramate hariH ॥

Sri Hari will reside there where family men will lead their life according to Dharma with pure thoughts and without any attachemnts and greed.

यत्रकुत्र कुले वासो येषु केषु भवोSस्तु मे ।
तव दास्यैकभावे स्यात् सदा सर्वत्र मे रतिः ॥

सुन्दरबाहुस्तव - सुन्दरो वत्सलत्वात्

यज्जातीयो यादृशो यत्स्वभावः
    पादाच्छायं संश्रितो योSपि कोSपि ।
तज्जातीयस्तादृशस्तत्स्वभावः
    श्लिष्यत्येनं सुन्दरो वत्सलत्वात् ॥

yajjAtIyaH yAdRushaH yatsvabhAvaH
    pAdAchAyaM samshrito yaH api kaH api ।
tajjAtIyaH tAdRushaH tatsvabhAvaH
     shliShyatyenam sundaro vatsalatvAt ॥

God does not differentiate among his devotees. Whatever be his caste, his ideals, his nature - if a devotee falls at his feet with complete devotion, God will embrace him with love. He will make the devotee feel as though He is also of same caste, same ideals and same nature.

मृद्वीका रसिता सिता समशिता स्फीतं निपीतं पयः
    स्वर्यातेन सुधाप्यधायि कतिधा रम्भाधरः खंडितः ।
तत्त्वं ब्रूहि मदीयजीव भवता भूयो भवे भ्राम्यता
कृष्णेत्यक्षरयोरयं मधुरिमोद्गारः क्वचिल्लक्षितः ॥

My dear life (and all past lives)! you have tasted grapes, sugar, creamy milk. You must have even tasted elixir on your visit to heaven. You would have already kissed Rambha (celestial beauty) on her lips. In this life also, you have traveled all world. Tell me, have you ever experienced any joy similar to what you get when you utter the name of 'Krishna'?

Oh Mukunda! I am prostrating before you humbly and asking for just one important wish. Bless me so that I will never forget the lotus feet of yours in all my future births.

शिवानंदलहरी - मा गच्छ त्वमितस्ततो

मा गच्छ त्वमितस्ततो गिरिश भो मय्येव वासं कुरु
    स्वामिन्नादिकिरात मामकमनःकांतारसीमांतरे ।
वर्तंते बहुशो मृगा मदजुषो मात्सर्यमोहादयः
    तान्हत्वा मृगयाविनोदरुचितालाभं च संप्राप्स्यसि ॥

Oh Lord Shiva! Don't go any where else. Please stay with me inside my mind always. You are the first hunter-god. The forest of mind is filled with wild animals running amok - like greed, lust, jealousy. You will have good time hunting them down.

मा कंचन शुचो राजन् यदीश्वरवशं जगत् ।
लोकाः सपाला यस्येमे वहंति बलिमीशितुः ।

mA kancana shuco rAjan yadIshvaravasham jagat ।
lokAH sapAlA yaseme vahanti balimIshituH ।
sa samyunakti bhUtAni sa eva viyunakti ca ।

Oh King! you are not the owner of this world. It is God who owns all world. So you don't have to feel sad for any loss. It is God who brings beings together and separates them. People may worship many other Gods or leaders. But all those salutations finally end up with the Creator himself.

समयोचित पलिका - गुरु भक्ति

मंत्रे तीर्थे द्विजे दैवे दैवज्ञे भेषजे गुरौ ।
यादृशीं भावनां कुर्यात् सिद्धिर्भवति तादृशी ॥

mantre tIrthe dvije daive daivajne bheShaje gurau ।

Hymns, holy places, a brahmin, God, one who has realized God, Doctor and teacher. If you treat them well, you will benefit. If you treat them badly, you will suffer. What happens to you depends on how you treat them.

वैराग्य शतक - भक्तिस्तरुणेंदुशेखरे

महेश्वरे वा जगतामधीश्वरे
     जनार्दने वा जगदंतरात्मनि ।
न वस्तुभेद प्रतिपत्तिरस्ति मे
     तथापि भक्तिस्तरुणेंदुशेखरे ॥

- वैराग्य शतक

maheshvare vA jagatAmadhishvare
     janArdane vA jagat antarAtmani ।
na vastu bheda pratipattirasti me
    tathApi bhaktiH taruNa indu shekhare ॥

- vairAgya shataka

Lord Shiva, who is the owner of this world, or Lord Vishnu who is in every one's conscience - I do not differentiate between them. Both are equal to me. But when it comes to worshiping, I worship the God with young moon on his head (Shiva). A mendicant would definitely identify with Shiva because Lord Shiva himself is said to have led a very ascetic life.

विश्वगुणादर्श - भगवद्भक्तिः

भूयो दोषैरपि परिवृतः पूरुषः सात्विकानां
     प्रायः पूज्यो भवति भगवद्भक्तिमासाद्य हृद्याम् ।
आक्रांतापि प्रबलभुजगैः कंटकैरप्यनल्पैः
    किं नादृत्या सुरभिकुसुमा केतकी भाग्यभाजाम् ॥

- विश्वगुणादर्श

bhUyo doShairapi parivRutaH pUruShaH sAtvikAnAm
     prAyaH pUjyo bhavati bhagavad bhaktim AsAdya hRudyAm ।
AkrAntApi prabala bhujagaiH kanTakaiH api analpaiH
    kim nAdRutyaa surabhikusumA ketakI bhAgyabhAjAm ॥

- vishva guNAdarsha

A man may have many defects. But if he has pure devotion towards God in his heart, then even he will be revered and respected by other people. The ketaki plant is considered very sacred even when it is surrounded by poisonous snakes and big thorns.

- Vishvagunadarsha

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - शरणं चरणं महेशस्य

भव्यमभव्यं वा नः प्रलिखतु वेधाः सुदुर्मेधाः ।
सव्यमसव्यं वा नः शरणं चरणं महेशस्य ॥

- अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक

bhavyam abhavyam vA naH pralikhatu vedhAH sudurmedhAH ।
savyam asavyam vA naH sharaNam charaNam maheshasya ॥

- appayya dIkShitasya vairAgya shataka

Let the creator write prosperity or misery in my fate. I would not bother.Either way I will bow down to the left or the right foot of the Lord. It does not matter whether it is misery or prosperity when the destination is the Lord himself.

भागवत - भगवानेक एवैष

भगवानेक एवैष सर्व क्षेत्रेष्ववस्थितः ।
अमुष्य दुर्भगत्वं वा क्लेशो वा कर्मभिः कुतः ॥

- भागवत

bhagavAn eka eva eSha sarva kShetreShu avasthitaH ।
amuShya durbhatvam vA klesho vA karmabhiH kutaH ॥

- bhAgavata

There is only one God. He is present every where and inside each being - living or non-living. That being so, how can he ever have misery, misfortune o any form of trouble. We perceive these feelings because we look at ourselves in isolation and miss the big picture.

भजगोविंद स्तोत्र - भगवद्गीता किंचिदधीता

भगवद्गीता किंचिदधीता
    गंगाजलवकणिका पीता ।
सकृदपि यस्य मुरारिसमर्चा
    कुरुते तस्य यमोऽपि न चर्चाम् ॥

- भजगोविंद स्तोत्र

bhagavadgIta kinchidadhItA
    gangAjalavakaNikA pItA ।
sakRudapi yasya murArisamarchA
    kurute tasya yamo api na charchAm ॥

Even if you read the Bhagavadgita even a little, drink a little water from Ganga, worshiped Vishnu a little - Yama (God of death) will not think about you.

    पुनरपि जननीजठरे शयनम् ।

    punarapi jananI jaThare shayanam ।

To be born again, to die again, to sleep once again in the womb of the mother - this is the rule of the world. There is lot of misery in this world. Oh Murari, please release me from this cycle.

न स्मरसि त्वमात्मानम्

पथि धावन्निह पतितो रोदिष्यंबाकरावलंबाय ।
पतितोद्धारणसमये किं न स्मरसि त्वमात्मानम् ॥

patita uddhAraNa samaye kim na smarasi tvam AtmAnam ॥

Oh! Krishna, you are playing the role of a small kid who has fallen down while running and is crying to get mother's attention. You want her to come and help you get up. Do you not remember your own plight when your devotees cry for help when they are stuck in this world?

भगवद्गीता - प्रयतात्मनः

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति ।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ॥

- भगवद्गीता

patram pushpam phalam tOyam yO mE bhakthyA prayacchati ।
tadaham bhaktyupahRutam ashnAmi prayatAtmanaH ॥

- bhagavad gIta

If you offer me anything with pure earnest devotion, I shall accept. It may be leaves, flowers, fruits or water. (as told by Lord Krishna)

भागवतमाहात्म्य - कृष्ण भक्ति

नृणां जन्मसहस्रेण भक्तौ प्रीतिर्हि जायते ।
कलौ भक्तिः कलौ भक्तिः भक्त्या कृष्णः पुरः स्थितः ॥

nRuNAm janma sahasreNa bhaktau prItiH hi jAyate ।
kalau bhakthiH kalau bhakthiH bhakthyA KrishnaH puraH sthitaH ॥

- bhAgavata mAhAtmya

Oh! King, after thousands of births will one get to understand the true meaning of devotion towards God. Devotion alone is the means to please him in the epoch of Kali. Only through devotion can one see Krishna standing in front of them.

भागवत - नृप

नृणां निःश्रेयसार्थाय व्यक्तिर्भगवतो नृप ।
अव्ययस्याप्रमेयस्य निर्गुणस्य गुणात्मनः ॥

- भागवत

nRuNAm niHshreyasArthAya vyaktiH bhagavato nRupa ।
avyayasya aprameyasya nirguNasya guNAtmanaH ॥

- bhAgavata

A king should be working selflessly only with the best interest of the subjects in his mind. He has to behave as if people can see indestructible, immeasurable, perfect (without any bad qualities) God through him.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - विषय सुख

निध्यायसि विषयसुखं न ध्यायसि विषममस्य परिपाकम् ।
बंधुं तमेव चिंतय बंधुं मोक्तुं च यः क्षमते ॥

- अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक

nidhyAyasi viShayasukham na dhyAyasi viShamam asya paripAkam ।
bandhum tameva chintaya bandhum mOktum cha yaH kShamate ॥

- appayya dIkShitasya vairAgya shataka

You are attaching yourself to worldly pleasures, not fully understanding the misery that follows. You should be thinking about God who alone can help you both attain attachment and detachment. He is the only attachment that one must have.

कुवलयानंद - लक्ष्मि

निद्राति स्नाति भुंक्ते चलति कचभरं शोषयत्यंतरास्ते
    दीव्यत्यक्षैर्न चायं गदितुमवसरो भूय आयाहि याहि ।
इत्युद्दंडैः प्रभूणामसकृदधिकृतैर्वारितान् द्वारि दीनान्
    अस्मान् पश्याभ्धकन्ये सरसिहरुचामंतरंगैरपांगैः ॥

nidrAti snAti bhunkte chalati kachabharam shoShayati antarAste
    vIvyati akShaiH na chAyam gaditum avasaro bhUya ayAhi yAhi ।
iti uddanDaiH prabhUNAm asakRut adhikRutaiH vAritAn dvAri dInAn
    asmAn pashya abdhikanye sarasiharuchAm antarangaiH apAngaiH ॥

When we go to the king, the sentries holding a stick stop (poor) us at the gate. They say that the king is sleeping, taking bath, eating, walking, drying his hair, wants to be alone, is gambling. Now is not a time to talk. They ask us to go away now and come back later. Oh! daughter of the ocean (Lakshmi) please look at us with the corner of your lotus like eyes (as pleasant as).

भागवत - न कुतश्चन बिभ्यति

नारायणपराः सर्वे न कुतश्चन बिभ्यति ।
स्वर्गापवर्गनरकेष्वपि तुल्यार्थदर्शिनः ॥

nArAyaNaparAH sarve na kutaH cha na bibhyati ।
svarga apavarga narakeShu api tulya artha darshinaH ॥

Real devotees of God do not fear anything. They treat heaven, misery or hell likely.

विश्वगुणादर्श - किमिह कमनीयं न कमलम्

निवस्तां वा कृत्तिं निवसतु चिरं वा पितृवने
    शिवस्तावद्धत्तामहिगणमथाप्येष सुभगः ।
परीतं शैलालैरुषितमपि पंकेषु मलिना
    मलीनां बिभ्राणं किमिह कमनीयं न कमलम् ॥

nivastAm vA kRuttiM nivasatu chiraM vA pitRuvane
    shivaH tAvat dhattA mahigaNam athApi eSha subhagaH ।
parItam shaiva alairuShitamapi pankeShu malinA
    malInAm bibhrANam kimaha kamanIyaM na kamalam ॥

- vishvaguNAdarsha

Lord Shiva wears animal hide, lives in a cemetery, has a snake around the neck - still he is so attractive and auspicious. The Lotus plant may be covered with moss and lichen, lives/blooms in mire, sprayed with discards of the bees - still it does looks beautiful.

भागवत - संसारिः

न ह्यतोऽन्यः शिवः पंथा विशतः संसृताविह ।
वासुदेवे भगवति भक्तियोगो यतो भवेत् ॥

- भागवत

na hi ataH anyaH shivaH panthA vishataH saMsRutAviha ।
vAsudeve bhagavati bhaktiyogo yato bhavet ॥

- bhAgavata

If there is a path available for people that leads them to devotion towards God, then there is no better path than this.

महिम्नः स्तोत्र - शिव

नमो नेदिष्ठाय प्रियदव दविष्ठाय च नमो
    नमः क्षोदिष्ठाय स्मरहर महिष्ठाय च नमः ।
नमो वर्षिष्ठाय त्रिनयन यविष्ठाय च नमो
    नमः सर्वस्मै ते तदिदमतिसर्वाय च नमः ॥

- महिम्नः स्तोत्र

namo nediShThAya priyadava daviShThAya cha namo
    namaH kShodiShThAya smarahara mahiShThAya cha namaH ।
namo varShiShThAya trinayana yaviShThAya ca namo
    namaH sarvasmai te tat idam ati sarvAya cha namaH ॥

I salute to the forest loving God who is both very near and very far. I salute to the greed killing God who is both very small and very big. I salute to God with the three eyes who very old and for ever young. I salute to Him who is all this and much more.

भागवत - प्रीयतेऽमलया भक्त्या

न दानं न तपो नेज्या न शौचं न व्रतानि च ।
प्रीयतेऽमलया भक्त्या हरिरन्यद् विडंबनम् ॥

na dAnam na tapo nejyA na shoucham na vratAni cha ।
prIyate amalayA bhaktyA hariH anyad viDambanam ॥

- bhAgavata

God is not pleased with charity, penance, rituals, cleanliness, or fasting. He is pleased only by pure devotion. Everything else is a mere joke.

भागवत - भक्त

न तथा ह्यघवान् राजन् पूयेत तप आदिभिः ।
यथा कृष्णार्पितप्राणस्तत्पूरुषनिषेवया ॥

- भागवत

na tathA hi aghavAn rAjan pUyeta tapa AdibhiH ।
yathA kRuShNArpita prANaH tat pUruSha niShevayA ॥

- bhAgavata

Oh! King, a sinner can not redeem himself by doing penances. But he can redeem himself by serving devotees who have offered their lives to the service of God (and follow their path).

भागवत - कैवल्य

न किंचित् साधवो धीरा भक्ता ह्येकान्तिनो मम ।
वांछंत्यपि मया दत्तं कैवल्यमपुनर्भवम् ॥

- भागवत

na kinchit sAdhavo dhIrA bhaktA hi ekAntino mama ।
vAnChanti api mayA dattam kaivalyam apunarbhavam ॥

- bhAgavata

The courageous, noble devotees of mine who seek solitude do not wish for anything. Not even heaven or the release from eternal cycle of births - both of which I can bestow on them.

भागवत - वासुदेव

न कामकर्मबीजानां यस्य चेतसि संभवः ।
वासुदेवैकनिलयः स वै भागवतोत्तमः ॥

- भागवत

na kAma karma bIjAnAm yasya chetasi sambhavaH ।
vAsudevaika nilayaH sa vai bhAgavatottamaH ॥

- bhAgavata

He is a real devotee whose mind does neither entertain seeds of greed nor worry about the consequences of one's actions. His mind is completely occupied by thoughts about God.

विश्वगुणादर्श - वृषगिरीशभक्तिः

धुनोति निबिडं तमः परिलुनाति पापाटवीं
    तनोति च मनोरथानुपचिनोति नानोत्सवान् ।
अनक्ति च पुनः पुनर्ननु मनः सुधानिर्झरैः
    व्यनक्ति परिओपक्त्रिमं वृषगिरीशभक्तिः शुभम् ॥

- विश्वगुणादर्श - वृषगिरीशभक्तिः

dhunoti nibiDam tamaH parilunAti pApa aTavIm
    tanoti cha manorathAn upachinoti nAnotsavAn ।
anakti cha punaH punaH nanu manaH sudhAnirjharaiH
    vyanakti paripaktrimaM vRRiShagirIsha bhaktiH shubham ॥

If one has strong devotion towards God, it will illuminate thick darkness, destroy the forest of sins, expands thoughts about God, gives various kinds of happiness. It will flood the mind again an again with elixir so that it can remain happy for ever.

चिंता स्तोत्र - त्वत्पादपंकजास्वादजीवितं

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षेषु नेच्छा मम कदाचन ।
त्वत्पादपंकजास्वादजीवितं दीयताम् मम ॥

dharma artha kAma mokSheShu na icChA mama kadAchana ।
tvat pAda pankaja AsvAda jIvitam dIyatAm mama ॥

Oh God! I am not interested in the four aspirations of mankind namely - Dharma, Wealth, Lust and salvation. All I want is to live by your lotus feet. Please grant this wish of mine.

भागवत माहात्म्य - धर्मं भजस्व सततं

धर्मं भजस्व सततं त्यज लोकधर्मान्
    सेवस्व साधुपुरुषान् जहि कामतृष्णाम् ।
अन्यस्य दोषगुणचिन्तनमाशु मुक्त्वा
    सेवाकथरसमहो नितरां पिब त्वम् ॥

dharmam bhajasva satatam tyaja lokadharmAn
    sevasva sAdhupuruShAn jahi kAmatRuShNAm ।
anyasya doShaguNachintanam Ashu puktvA
    sevAkathArasam aho nitarAM piba tvam ॥

Always follow Dharma in its purest form. Do not follow what is defacto which changes from time to time and from place to place. Serve noble men (mendicants). Give up greed to get more and lust. Stop finding faults in others. Spend your time in serving others and listening to tales about God.
