तप्ते सर्पिषि पूरिका क्षिप्ताह्यामा करोति बहुशब्दान्
    पक्वा यथा यथा सोनयति हि शब्दं ततस्तूष्णीम् ।
तद्वत्पुंसो ज्ञानं यावत्स्वल्पं करोति बहुवादान्
    पूर्णज्ञानप्राप्तौ शान्तो विजितेन्द्रियस्तथा भवति ॥

tapte sarpiShi pUrikA kShiptAhyAmA karoti bahu shabdAn
    pakvA yathaa yathaa sonayati hi shabdam tataH tUShNIm ।

    pUrNa jnAna prAptau shAnto vijitendriyaH tathA bhavati ॥

When poori (a snack) is dropped into hot ghee, it makes a lot of noise. But when it bakes properly, it stops making noise and rises up. Just like that a person with half-knowledge will make a lot of noise and arguments. One he gets full knowledge he will have more control over his senses and hence will find peace within himself.

If you are thirsty and want to drink water from a lake, you know the one must drink the clear water without disturbing the bottom. If you disturb, then dirt from bottom will contaminate the drinkable water. Similarly, if you want to think about God, you must keep all other argumentative thoughts aside, think about Him only and sing about Krishna in a low melodious tone.

When a traveller goes to a new city, he will be confused with many similar looking paths in that city. To reach his destination, he will have to consult and follow a local expert. Just like that, every man gets confused in this world regarding the path to be taken for complete happiness. He has to find and learn from an able teacher. Find the teacher, and it is easy to find the happiness (God).

A lamp is capable of throwing light on any object and drive away the darkness. But it can not make the darkness right below it go away at all. Similarly, a scholar may teach the entire world to renounce and let go of attachments. But it is usually seen that people who are close him - wife, sons (children) and servants will not be able to let go of their attachments towards him.

Everyone is aware that there are pearls in the ocean. But only those who make the effort to dive and use their intelligence to search for it will get them. Similarly, God is everywhere in this creation (world). He is there, not in the form that we expect him to be. But if you want to see him as he is (and realize) then you have to make the effort - by listening to his stories, contemplating on his form and existence, so on.

God provides for us all. This is accepted. But that does not make him kind and compassionate. Everybody knows that every father does the same for his children - provide and protect. However, God also saves us devotees from the path of material pleasures and puts us on the good path of Dharma. This is what makes him truly kind and compassionate.

If the head of the family is careful, thieves will not be able to get into the house. This applies to thieves who rob the family of their virtuous ways by corrupting their thought with rogue ideas.

mRut kumbho jala pUrNo hi anAsthayA udghaTita mukho yadvat

    rahito bhaktyA api bhavet na tathA syAt kRuShNa chariteH astaH ॥

If you leave a mud pot filled with water unattended with the mouth open, in short period you will see that it will lose all water (to evaporation). On the other hand, if you take care of it by closing the lid, or refilling often, even little water will remain for long and never get empty. Just like that one must fill the heart with devotion towards God. Having done so, if one indulges in worldly pleasures, the devotion will vanish very soon. But if you continue to be keep Krishna in mind always, then the pot of devotion will never get empty.

A patient having high fever is lying helpless. Beside him are cold water, sour fruits, salty food and pickles. When he is thirsty or hungry, he will consume them against common knowledge that they are harmful - him being an idiot. Similarly, even scholars who are deprived of wealth and women know that desire of women and wealth is harmful. Yet, when they see these distractions around, they succumb to it and stray from the path of virtue.

The big brother goes in front of his little sister wearing a Lion's mask. She will be scared and starts crying. At that moment, he will remove the mask and show his pleasant face which will drive away all fear from the sister as she feels secured. Just like that God creates this illusion and generates a lot of fear and grief in our lives. But when we can see him in real form, there will be no fear and endless happiness.

कान्तापुत्राभावे प्रसह्य मोहेन कस्यचित्पुत्रम्

When people are free from wife and children, they are free from all bondages. But such people will create more bondages with somebody else's children, or a dog, or a parrot, or a monkey. They will not create bondage with God by listening to the stories of Vishnu and Lakshmi. This is like trying to quench the thirst for milk by drinking curd. It is surprising that even learned and knowledgeable people do this.

An eagle resides at the extremely pure feet Lord Vishnu. He always flies high in the sky. Yet, even at that distance his eyes are set on the rotting flesh way down on the ground. Similarly, a scholar may be giving out discourses imparting the best knowledge he has to general public. If he is still not let go of his greed, his eyes will be set on the beautiful women in the audience who wear a lot of golden ornaments.

तरुमूले संस्थायाशोभनपतगान् सनामतालिकया

    उत्सारयति निरोधैस्स्वान्तस्य च वासनाः कुपरिणामाः ॥

    dUrIkaroti manujo yathA tathA hi iishachintane magnaH।

One who wants to sleep under a tree will call names and clap to drive out all the inauspicious birds (cacophony - crows, owls, etc..). Similarly, if one is interested in deep thinking about God, then he must sing songs about the Lord himself to drive out all the evil influences from his surroundings as well as with in himself.

ना यावत्पुत्रं सूते तावद्गृहकर्म चेतसा कुरुते

    वेत्तिनयावत् कृष्णं सेवानन्दाप्लुतस्ततो भवति ॥

    jAte putre na tathA putrAnandAplutA bhavati।

Until a woman does not have a child, she will take part in all household activities with lot of interest. Once she has some children, her energy is completely spent in keeping the children happy and she will lose interest in the household work. Similarly, until one finds the devotion in Krishna, they will indulge themselves with lot of interest in the worldly activities. After finding that devotion, they will care about nothing and derive all their happiness from serving the Lord.

लोहासिः स्पर्शमणेः स्पर्शात्स्वर्णासितां लभते ।

An iron sword will turn into a gold sword when it comes in contact with the touchstone. After that it can kill any being. Similarly anyone who comes takes refuge in Lord Krishna will become virtuous and never hurt anyone.

लोहं स्पर्शात्स्वर्णं स्पर्शमणेर्यत्रकुत्रचित्क्षिप्तम् ।

    मलिनं स्यात्तच्चेशे बद्धं तिष्ठेत्सुनिर्मलं नूनम् ॥

After washing the elephant, if it is left free, it will get muddy in a second. But if you keep it restrained, then it will remain clean. Similarly, our mind becomes clean when it comes in contact with a virtuous person. But if you talk to rogue later, it will again become polluted. However, if you can restrain it by thinking about God at all times, then it can kept clean and pure.

If you dive in the ocean only once, you may not get any pearls. But you must not conclude that there are no pearls in the ocean or no pearls at all. You must repeat the effort again and again. You may get it once. Just like that is is not easy to know about the true form of God. One has to keep trying hard to find it by trying again and again by showing devotion in the form of prayers, listening to God's stories and thinking about Him always.

The pillows may be of many different colors. But the cotton inside each one of them is the same - white. Just like that people (beings) may black or pale, wicked or virtuous - there is the same God residing in each of them.

हितोपदेशं शृणुयात् कुर्वीत च यथोदितम् ।
विदुरोक्तमकृत्वाभूत्कौरवः शोकशल्यभाक् ॥

viduroktam akRutvA bhUt kauravaH shoka shalya bhAk ॥

You must listen to people when they are advising for your own well being - and do as they say. Kaurava listened to Vidura, but did not do as he said. As a result he met with lot of grief.

One may be handsome, with good character, born to a good family and have lot of wealth - yet he will not be accepted if he is not well educated. Education is the ornament that every one is looking for.

साक्षरा विपरीताश्चेद्राक्षसा एव केवलम् ।
सरसो विपरीतश्चेत् सरसत्वं न मुंचति ॥

saraso viparItaH chet sarasatvam na munchati ॥

A person may be educated. But under stress if he is not able to control himself, then he will only be a 'rakshasa' - evil. But on the other hand, if a mild person is able to retain his composure he will be called 'sarasatva' even if he is not educated.

[Translator's note: Pun here is literate (sAkshara) will be evil easily (rAkshasa). But one with mild manners (sarasa) will retain his mildness (sarasatva, close to goddess of wisdom.)]
