सूक्तिमुक्तावली - दीपकः अधस्थ तिमिरं

प्रकाशयति दीपको भुवि पदार्थजातंतथाप्यधस्थ-
    तिमिरं महन्नहि विनाशमागच्छति ।
महात्मनिकटस्थिताज्ञसुतदारकाणां महात्मनो-
    महिमवेदनं न खलु हृद्यबन्धापहम् ॥

prakAshayati dIpako bhuvi padArthajAtaM tathApi adhastha -
    timiram mahan na hi vinAsham aagachChati ।
mahAtma nikaTa sthita aajna suta dArakaaNAm mahAtmanaH
    mahimavedanaM na khalu hRudyabandhApaham ॥

A lamp is capable of throwing light on any object and drive away the darkness. But it can not make the darkness right below it go away at all. Similarly, a scholar may teach the entire world to renounce and let go of attachments. But it is usually seen that people who are close him - wife, sons (children) and servants will not be able to let go of their attachments towards him.
