सूक्तिमुक्तावली - भोग भ्रष्टः

ग्रस्तो ज्वरेण रोगी शीताम्भश्चाम्ललवणशाकमपि
    सान्निध्ये यदि त्स्यादविवेकात्क्षुत्तृडाकुलो भोक्ता ।
पाता चैवं विद्वान् स्त्रीधनभोगाद्यभावदाहेन
    तप्तः सविधे स्त्रीधनदर्शनतः स्यात् स्वमार्ग विभ्रष्टः ॥

grasto jvareNa rogI shItAmbhaH aamla lavaNa shAkamapi
    sAnnidhye yadi tasyaad avivekAt kShuttRud aakulo bhoktA ।
pAtA chaivam vidvAn strI dhana bhogAdi abhAva dAhena
    taptaH savidhe strI dhana darshanataH syAt svamArga vibhraShTaH ॥

A patient having high fever is lying helpless. Beside him are cold water, sour fruits, salty food and pickles. When he is thirsty or hungry, he will consume them against common knowledge that they are harmful - him being an idiot. Similarly, even scholars who are deprived of wealth and women know that desire of women and wealth is harmful. Yet, when they see these distractions around, they succumb to it and stray from the path of virtue.
